What's your goal

Posted On: August 24, 2010 by Chris Cruz

So it has been a week since my last blog and about my 3rd real week since starting my diet. Right about now is the time when I find myself starting to slip off my diet because my schedule is hectic or the calorie counting is breaking me down. The real reason is because I have hit that 5lbs wall that seems to always get me. I have found that losing and keep those first 5lbs off is the toughest for me. Mostly because my first 5lbs really turns into my first 10lbs. It never fails when I start a diet within the first week I put on 5lbs, like clockwork. I couldn’t tell you why and any Dr. or trainer I have worked with or talked to can’t tell me why. Another reason for my slip around this time is my health issues. I played some type of sport for a number of years and my knees and hips are always in pain. I find it hard to walk and if I do I’m pretty much stiff or in a lot of pain the next day. This time around I have found motivation in different things to keep me going. I feel stronger this time around and I have busted through that wall and I’m not slowing down.

One of the major factors for this has been Wes and The Fat Guy, I won’t let Lamar get back down to his sexy before me lol. The other is my fiancé Sarah and my daughter Laney, I know I need better control on my health so I can spend more time with them. I have set some realistic goals this time around which I think is a major thing when trying to lose weight. Any time I have gone into a gym and worked with a trainer they ask what my goal weight is, they often want me to tell them what I want to get all the way down too. While that’s great to have a final goal weight I think it’s more important to have a starting goal weight. For me I wanted to be down to 300 lbs by my daughter’s birthday Oct 2nd and then 280 by year’s end. I think my first weight goal is a struggle but one I can do if I stay true to my weight loss and don’t take a break from it. In years past I have set that goal weight at 250lbs, with no goal in between which is a lot of weight to drop (almost 100lbs at one time). When you set a goal so high you can’t help but set yourself up for failure. Well some can do that but let’s be honest I wouldn’t have needed to lose 100lbs if I could follow through with a goal like that.

One of the other bad things I used to do was rewards; if I dropped 10lbs I would allow myself a full cheat day. The problem with that is one day turns to two and soon I have put back on those 10lbs or most of them and I become discouraged. Rewards are great just don’t make them about food, make it something like a day at the movie alone with no kids (if you have kids) or the next time the weather is great and you are working call in sick and go for a hike. It doesn’t feel like exercise because you are playing hooky from work and the weather is great. Plus you can take your time it’s a leisure day the main goal of a reward is to enjoy it. Also remember weight loss is a marathon not a sprint so just because someone else is dropping a lot of weight try not to feel like you have to starve yourself or working out 8 hours to catch up. Just like we all gain weight different we all lose it differently as well, just stick to your program and you will get there.

Ok that wraps this blog up but make sure you check back soon as Lamar, Lafe and myself will be hitting the disc golf links tomorrow so video and photos will be coming. Till next time we dream to become what we strive to achieve.
